cappucino cheese cake for lunch :)

My lunch today... a slice of cappucino cheese cake from Starbucks :)

I actually bought 2 slices of cheese cake from the shop, this one and a slice of Oreo cheese cake. The shop assistant asked me if I was going to have them for tea later. I told him I'm eating one of them for lunch. He told me that no one should eat cake for lunch. Well, that's too bad, because I eat cake for lunch and dinner all the time. Of course, a friend told me that people with sore throats should avoid chocolate. I'm still coughing up blood, but I can't stay away from chocolate. Aiyah... eat now, die later. LOL!

a slightly healthier dinner :)

I promised to take G out to dinner tonight. She said she wanted to have fish and chips from Hooked! @ the Rail Mall. Well, her wish is my command :)

After eating 2 slices of cheese cake in one afternoon, I decided to have a really light dinner. So it's pumpkin soup for me...

G's dinner, more chips than fish! But she enjoyed the smiley face chips more than the fish, so it wasn't all that bad...

We had ice cream in extreme moderation tonight. One cone shared between me and G :)

Tomorrow, we're going to have fish and chips + chocolate ice cream for dinner at Swensen's. I'm still waiting for G to get sick of fish and chips. Keeping my fingers crossed :)

love is gentle, love is kind...

This is another one of my favourite songs...

I only like this version by Karla Bonoff, but I guess most people would be more familiar with the one done by Jewel/Indigo Girls/Sarah McLachlan for Lilith Fair.

I remember first hearing this song on the radio sometime in 1996 or 1997. There was a radio DJ who must have been slightly obsessed with the song, because he played it nearly every night around the time I would be driving home from school. One night, I was giving K, a postdoc from another lab, a lift home when we heard it over the radio. I told him that I really liked the song.

The next day, he handed me the CD soundtrack of an American sitcom "thirtysomething". The song was in the compilation. Back in those days, you couldn't just rip a song from a CD. So he gave me the CD because I liked that one song. But I returned him the CD after awhile anyway...

lunch with some old friends...

I went out to lunch with a couple of old friends today. They heard that I got promoted, and I wanted to give them a treat. We went to our favourite zhi char place at a coffee shop near the Commonwealth Market.

Hot plate beef slices. The sauce was so good...

Lotus root and pork ribs steamed soup. It soothed my poor sore throat :)

Deep fried prawn-paste chicken wings. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside...

Special dish not found on the menu - home-style steamed eggs. You have to ask for this, and they will only make it for you if you're a regular here...

I still don't know what vegetable this is. It's called "yao ma" in Cantonese, which means sprouts from sesame seeds. The dish was done with fermented bean curd, which delivers a mean punch. Perfect for eating with white rice :)

The business at this coffee shop is picking up. Before, you could always get a table anytime at lunch. Now, if you arrive after 12pm, you'd have to wait awhile. It's a good thing our office is only a stone's throw away :)

chocolate ice cream for lunch, chocolate donuts for dinner...

Today is Youth Day, and G doesn't have school. We went out gallivanting as usual. I let G decide what she wanted to eat for lunch and dinner (I make hot cooked breakfasts for her everyday). So... we had chocolate ice cream for lunch and chocolate donuts for dinner...

TGIF!!!

It's Friday, and I think I will be able to last the whole day in the office without collapsing from the cold meds.

Here's my TGIF picture this week :)

I actually put on weight after lying in bed for 2 whole days leh! OMG! I had trouble pulling on the boots over my calves this morning. Help!!!

smiley faces...

I think my cold meds are trying to be funny... they're smiling at me! Hahahaha... so cute :)

They're winking at me! How cheeky!

I'm still feeling like death warmed over. But I've crept back to my office to do some critical stuff, and then I'm out of here. If the H1N1 officer-in-charge here catches me at work, I'm dead meat :P

Valrhona chocolate cake for dinner and supper :)

I got this Valrhona chocolate cake from Dolci Da Paolo the same time I got the meringue. G's asked me to get a nice fudgey chocolate cake for her supper, and her wish is my command :)

My slice of cake... it was SO GOOD! This was like a solid block of chocolate. Not for the faint hearted :)

Although I'm a Lana chocolate cake fan, G's more into the super-rich and fudgey kind of chocolate cakes. Her favourite is still the chocolate cake from Cake Ave. I might pop by their shop to get another cake when we've finished the Valrhona - which would be really soon because there's only 2 tiny slices left :)

sweet sweet sweet!

Last weekend, G told me that she missed eating meringues. I usually get the tiny ones from Galbiati at the Rail Mall for her, but I know she would really get a kick out of eating this...

Mega big meringue from Da Paolo Dolci!

I have bought big meringues from them before for making desserts, but not to eat on their own. But why not? We had so much fun demolishing this monster meringue last night :)

get together afternoon tea...

I organised a get-together afternoon tea for a couple of the research programmes at my office last Friday. When I found out what kind of refreshments would be provided, I didn't think many people would turn up. Hahahaha... I was given 3 tins of Khong Guan biscuits by our facilities department! OMG!

Anyway, I had half a Lana chocolate cake that I could share (not the one that I brought home for G lah), so I thought I'd bring it along.

Cake all sliced up...

Cake all gone!!!

Most of the people who turned up were foreigners, so I explained to them while I was serving the cake that it was from a very famous shop :) They all said that the cake was fantastic. See? Good chocolate cake transcends all international borders :)

Some of the people who came for the tea...

Ok... the event turned out better than expected. I was expecting 15 people, but more than 30 turned up.

By the way, the pictures in this post were taken using my new Xperia phone. The LCD screen on the phone is much larger than the one on my Nikon P5000 and the same as the one on my Sony T70, so I'm quite happy to leave the cameras at home for now and just use the Xperia for taking snaps. I'm not mad about megapixels anyway, and 3.2 megapixel provided by the Xperia is fine by me :)

TGIF!

I'm wearing my "Pretty Woman" boots today!!! TGIF!!!

Observations:
Wolf whistles from men
Hostile stares from women
You can't please everyone, but at least I'm happy :)

lana chocolate cake!!!

Look at what I brought home today! A chocolate cake from Lana Cakes! Yay!

G eating her dessert before her dinner! I can only say that I'm an enlightened mom. Dessert before dinner is definitely ok by me :)

Must call and order ahead if you want a Lana chocolate cake :) The phoneline is quite impossible to get through. You must persist and be patient. I don't quite understand why the line is so busy because when I was at the shop, the phone wasn't ringing, and no one was talking on the phone? Hmmmmm...

shopping loot + iPhone tech support :)

First up, the spoils from today's mother-daughter wanderings. We shopped for shoes...

... books :)

Although I don't own an iPhone, I am now the iPhone tech-support at our household. I set up G's iPhone so that she can surf the web and listen to iTunes. I also taught her how to make and take calls, and text her friends (that's what a phone is for right? LOL!). When H came home tonight, I did the same thing for his iPhone. AND I had to show him how to make and take calls with his phone. Maybe I should get myself an iPhone! Hahahaha... But seriously, the iPhone is much much easier to use and set up than my Xperia. For all the die-hard Windows users out there, get an iPhone lah. It takes you maybe 15 minutes to set-up, and 2 minutes to learn how to use it :)

peace restored :)

G doing her homework while listening to the E.N.D by the Black Eyed Peas on her NEW iPhone :)

She's ecstatic over her new phone, and I get to have my Xperia back :)

it's got touch screen, qwerty, wi-fi, autofocus camera etc etc etc

I got a new phone yesterday, before my knee failed, that is. And G has run off with it. It is now hers. LOL!

I wanted to get a phone with the following features:
Touchscreen
QWERTY keypad
Autofocus megapixel camera
Wifi enabled
MP3 capability
Not stupid - think super slow Symbian OS in Nokias
Not too expensive - about S$500 after recontracting

After doing some shopping around, I decided to get the Sony Ericsson Xperia. But there's one million little functions I need to learn and I need to get the phone back from G! LOL!
